Chamuska’s journey… from the most valuest cups to the “glory of Neom.”
Brazilian Pericles Chamusca has written his name in gold among coaches who have arrived in Saudi stadiums, particularly in recent years. He has continued to achieve success with Saudi clubs, culminating in leading NEOM to the Professional League for the first time in history.
The Brazilian coach needed less than a year to make history in Saudi Arabia with NEOM, which secured promotion to the Saudi Professional League for the first time in its history and is on the verge of winning the Yelo League for first-division professional clubs, a historic achievement.
During his 30 Yelo League matches, Chamusca led NEOM to 21 wins, the most wins, 6 draws, and 3 losses (the league’s fewest losses).
Under Chamusca’s leadership, NEOM scored 65 goals (the league’s best attack) and conceded 24 (the league’s second-best defense).
Chamusca, 59, officially began his coaching career in 1992, starting with Brazilian club Vitória. He has since led 18 Brazilian clubs, including Corinthians, Alajano, Porto, Botafogo, and others. Throughout his experience with Brazilian clubs, he has only won one title, the Copa del Rey, in the 2003-2004 season, with Santo André.
In 2005, Chamusca took over the coaching of his first non-Brazilian team, Oita Trinita in Japan, where he worked for four years, winning the league cup in the 2007-2008 season.
Chamusca had previously coached non-Saudi Arab clubs, having previously led the Qatari trio of Al-Arabi, Al-Jaish, and Al-Gharafa. He also took over the technical responsibility of the Emirati club, but left after just six months.
2018… The Beginning of His Journey in the Kingdom
The Brazilian coach arrived in Saudi Arabia in 2018 when he took over as coach of Al-Faisaly, achieving the highest number of victories in a single season with 11 wins.
Chamusca is a rare hero in the Saudi League, having been loaned to Al-Hilal while coaching Al-Faisaly during the 2018-2019 season.
However, the Brazilian coach’s greatest achievement on the Saudi pitch came with Al-Faisaly, winning the 2021 Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cup, the club’s first title in its history.
After the end of the season, Chamusca left Al Majma’ah for Riyadh for the second time, this time to coach the Al Shabab team. He led the team in 27 matches in the Professional League and the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cup.
Under the Brazilian coach, Al Shabab won 15 of their 27 matches, drew 8, and lost 4.
Chamusca was dismissed from coaching Al-Shabab in March 2022 after the team slipped to fourth place. However, under his leadership, the team qualified for the quarterfinals of the King’s Cup.
Three months after his dismissal, Chamusca embarked on a new experience in the Saudi League when Al-Taawoun announced the signing of the Brazilian coach for one season. He led the team in 62 matches, before taking on a new challenge by taking over as coach of NEOM, whom he led to glory.
